Type of incident - Road Traffic Collision
Date of incident - 12/02/07
Time - 8.00am
Location - Leigh, Kent
Tony McCormack was driving to work when he was involved in a very serious road traffic accident. This resulted in him needing the help of the Kent Air Ambulance. Tony recalls very little about the accident but remembers hearing a 'loud bang' when he was involved in a collision with another car.
Tony remembers regaining consciousness in the car but being trapped and unable to move. The emergency services were called, as well as the Kent Air Ambulance, which took just 5 minutes to reach the scene. Colin Mitchell, doctor on board the Air Ambulance, comments 'there was extensive damage to the vehicle and the patient was involved in prolonged entrapment. We were able to provide additional critical care interventions to facilitate his extraction.'
Tony was able to remain pretty calm throughout the ordeal. He suffered multiple fractures and there was concern as to the state of his right leg. Two hours later, the emergency services were able to rescue him from the wreckage and the Kent Air Ambulance took only 5 minutes to fly him to Maidstone Hospital. The crew had ensured that a medical team was waiting to receive Tony, and he went straight into surgery for many hours.
Tony stayed in hospital for 3 weeks and then embarked on a rehabilitation programme which mainly consisted of physiotherapy and hydrotherapy. A year after his accident, Tony visited our base to personally thank the crew that saved him that day.
