Type of incident – Medical Emergency

Date of incident – 07/08/07

Time – 5.30pm

Location – Ash, near Sandwich

On 7 August 2007, Mrs Humphrey suffered a heart attack whilst out walking just outside Sandwich in Kent. Mrs Humphrey, who was 84 at the time, collapsed to the floor with breathing difficulties. Her son immediately called for an ambulance. When they arrived it was clear that although they could attend to her, they would not be able to get her to a hospital because of the remoteness of the location and the evident pain that Mrs Humphrey was in.

The ambulance crew called for Kent Air Ambulance to assist them in transporting Mrs Humphrey to a hospital where she needed vital medical attention. Kent Air Ambulance arrived within 20 minutes. The helicopter landed in the same field that Mrs Humphrey lay in. The crew carried out routine checks on Mrs Humphrey and were able to then transport her to the helicopter and connect her to the machinery they carry with them.

It took just 5 minutes for Mrs Humphrey to be transferred to Margate hospital where the crew had arranged for the necessary doctors to be waiting.

Mrs Humphrey spent 4 days in hospital before returning home. She wanted to pass on her enormous thanks to the crew for ensuring that she got to hospital so quickly. She mentioned that she was very frightened but that the calmness of the crew relaxed her and helped to ease her anxiety.
