From April a unique collaboration with Sussex Police means
that an Air Ambulance service will be flying at night across
The police helicopter (Hotel 900) will be used to respond to serious medical emergencies during the hours of darkness, with a critical care paramedic on board. £250,000 of funding from the charity will not only ensure continuity of the on board medical service but if successful, the charity will move towards enhancing the service by putting a specialist doctor on board.
Hotel 900 is an MD902 Explorer, the same model of helicopters
that we fly. It is kitted out with medical equipment and already has the night
flying vision equipment that is needed to safely fly during the hours of
darkness.
To equip our own helicopters to fly at night would cost around £1
million each. Hotel 900 is a joint police/medical operation by day, and flies
with a paramedic; however from April 1st it now carries a critical
care paramedic until 1.30 in the morning and is operational throughout
